Judge David J. Avery - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. David J. Avery is a judge for the Allen County Superior Court in Indiana. He was appointed to the bench in August 2000.

Avery has held an assignment in the Civil Division, where he handles requests for conditional driving privileges. He previously oversaw mental health detentions and commitments and is credited with implementing the CIT program for the Fort Wayne Police Department as well as providing CIT training for law enforcement personnel. Avery also served as Chief Judge of the Allen County Superior Court.

He received B.S. in economics from Illinois State University. Avery went on to complete a J.D. at Valparaiso University School of Law in 1976.

He has been active with the Indiana Judicial Conference, serving on its Judicial Ethics Committee.

A proponent of voluntary pro bono legal services for indigent individuals, Avery sat on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Lawyer Program of Northeaster Indiana and chaired the Board of Directors of Pro Bono Indiana. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Allen County Bar Foundation, The Carriage House, and the Lutheran Senior Care Ministry.

Avery has been recognized by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and Mental Health America in Allen County for his work on behalf of the mentally ill. In addition, the Indiana State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section presented him with the Oustanding Judge Award and its Litigation Section presented him with the Civility Award. Avery is also the recipient of the Pro Bono Award for Passion & Excellence from the Volunteer Lawyer Program of Northeast Indiana.

When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys spending time with his wife and family. His other hobbies include fishing, yard work, taking walks, and watching the Chicago White Sox games. Avery fishes, Lake Erie, Lake Michigan, and Canada.
