Judge Douglas V. Van Dyk: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Douglas V. Van Dyk (Ret.) served as a judge for the 5th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon. Van Dyke joined the bench in 2002. He retired on April 30, 2021.


The 5th Judicial District encompasses Clackamas County.


Prior to his appointment, Van Dyke was a shareholder at Jordan Schrader, a law firm he joined in 1996. During his tenure there, he specialized in construction delay claims as well as banking, real estate, land use, securities, and foreclosure disputes.


Van Dyk earned a bachelor’s degree in comparative literature from the University of Washington in 1982. He then completed a J.D. at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1985.


After graduating from law school, Van Dyk entered into private practice. He started as an associate at Dunn, Carney, Allen, Higgins & Tongue, where he handled commercial disputes involving non-compete agreements, creditor rights, bankruptcy, agricultural lending, and insurance defense. Then, in 1989, he joined Foster Popper & Shefelman, concentrating on construction liens, banking, securities, sports law, real estate, land use, employment, commercial, and foreclosure matters.
