Judge Elizabeth J. Berns - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Elizabeth J. Berns is a judge for the King County Superior Court in Washington. She was elected to the bench on November 6, 2012.

Prior to her election, Berns worked as a sole practitioner in her own private practice, the Law Office of Elizabeth J. Berns. She represented individuals, families, and businesses in workers’ compensation, estate planning and probate, business and intellectual property, and family law matters.

During this time, she also sat as a judge pro tem for the King County District Court as well as a pro tem commissioner for the King County Superior Court.

Berns earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental health and law from the University of Washington in 1989. She spent the next several years working as a research scientist in chemistry and indoor air pollution for Nobel Industries before completing a J.D. at the University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1993.

After graduating from law school, Berns began her legal career as a deputy attorney general in the Division of Labor and Industries of the State Attorney General’s Office. She was tasked with handling workers’ compensation matters.

Berns has co-authored a chapter on LGBTQ Minorities and Sexual Offenses in the Sexual Offense Bench Guide for Judges as well as a chapter on LGBTQ DV in the Domestic Violence Manual for Judges. She is also the Project Chair for the King County Domestic Violence and Child Maltreatment Coordinated Response Oversight Committee.

Her memberships have included the American Chemical Society’s Division of Chemistry and the Law (co-chair) and the Washington State Bar Association Q-Law Judicial Evaluation Committee (vice-chair). She also served as a volunteer legal advisor for the University of Washington’s Business and Economic Development Program and the University of Washington’s Estate Planning Counsel.

Berns was born and raised in Seattle, Washington.
