Judge Erin Kirkwood - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Erin Kirkwood is a referee for the 4th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Multnomah County. She joined the bench in 2021.

While on the circuit court, Kirkwood has handled arraignments, diversion entries, civil commitment petitions for stalking orders, landlord/tenant issues, and traffic and parking tickets. She also presided as a pro tem judge for the Beaverton and Tigard Municipal Courts and worked in the Office of Administrative Hearings.

Before that, Kirkwood practiced as an associate at the Reynolds Defense Firm (2017 to 2019) and as an attorney at Calhoun & Fishback, PC (2005 to 2017). Her areas of practice included felony indigent defense and DUII matters.

Kirkwood also briefly worked as a public defender for the Metropolitan Public Defender (2003 to 2005).

She received a B.A. in women’s studies from the University of Guelph in 1999. Kirkwood went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Oregon School of Law in 2002. While a law student, her activities included the UO Law LGBT Organization (OUTLAWs).

After graduating from law school, Kirkwood served as a clerk for the Hon. Janice Wilson with the 4th Judicial District Circuit Court.

She has conducted “Trans 101” presentations at the Multnomah County Courthouse and the Yamhill County Courthouse and was a past volunteer for Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue.

Kirkwood was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. A former amateur boxer, Kirkwood enjoys spending time outdoors, swimming, motorcycle riding, canoeing, hunting, and training her pointing dog for hunting.
