Judge Gary E. Miller: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Gary E. Miller (Ret.) was a district judge for the Canadian County District Court (District 26) in Oklahoma. He was appointed to the position by former Governor Brad Henry in February 2010. Miller retired in 2017.

He also spent time as an associate district judge in Canadian County, joining the court in 1993. Miller left that position in 2008.

In between his judicial positions, he was the Director of Children and Family Services with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (2008 to 2010).

Before joining the bench, Miller was in private practice (1978 to 1993) and served as the city attorney for the City of Yukon (1993).

He received a B.A. from the University of Central Oklahoma. Miller went on to complete a J.D. at Oklahoma City University School of Law. He was admitted to practice in Oklahoma in 1978.

He was a past chairman of the Oklahoma Supreme Court Juvenile Judges Association Committee and a member of its Juvenile Oversight Committee.

In addition, Miller served as a member of the Oklahoma Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) (board member), the Oklahoma Commission for Children and Youth Board, the Message of Life Ministries International (Board of Directors), Christ Church (Board of Directors), and the Oklahoma State Post-Adjudication Advisory Review Board.

Miller was named CASA Judge of the Year (2000) and H.B. Frank Citizen of the Year by the Yukon Chamber of Commerce (2001).

He was also the recipient of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Adult Protection Award (1995), the Champion of Children Award from the Oklahoma Foster Families Association (2000), the Alma Wilson Leadership Award from the Office of Juvenile Affairs (2002), the Alma Wilson Award from the Oklahoma Bar Association, and the Canadian County KIDS Award and Canadian County Adult Protective Services Award from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

Following his retirement, Miller returned to his position as city attorney in Yukon.
