Judge John B. Scherling - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. John B. Scherling is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed by former governor Jerry Brown in 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Carol Isackson.

Scherling earned a B.S. from Iowa State University. He then received a J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1985.

He began his legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Judith N. Keep of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Then, in 1986, he began working as an associate at Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher.

Scherling left the firm in 1990 in order to join the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California. During his fifteen-year tenure as an assistant U.S. Attorney, Scherling handled district court jury trials, bench trials, and appeals.

After leaving the Office of the United States Attorney, Scherling briefly worked as of counsel for Hahn and Adema as well as Sughrue Mion, PLLC. Then, in 2008, he was elevated to partner at Sughrue Mion, PLLC, where he specialized in intellectual property disputes (i.e., patents, trademarks, and trade secrets) for domestic and foreign clients. He served in this capacity until his appointment to the bench.

Scherling has been a board member of the World Trade Center in San Diego.

Scherling enjoys surfing, biking, and swimming in his free time. His wife has worked for the San Diego Unified School District, where she has assisted children with learning disabilities.

He is registered without party preference.
