Judge Karin S. Schwartz - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Karin S. Schwartz is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2019. She filled the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Ioana Petrou to the Court of Appeal.

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Schwartz graduated with her B.A. in mathematics from Bryn Mawr College in 1986. She went on to earn her J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1994.

After graduating from law school, Schwartz completed a clerkship with the Hon. Jack B. Weinstein with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She then worked as an associate for Debevoise and Plimpton LLP from 1995 to 2000 and for Munger, Tolles, and Olson LLP from 2000 to 2003.

Schwartz left private practice in 2003 after she accepted a position with the California Department of Justice's Office of the Attorney General. During her ten-year tenure there, Schwartz held several positions including supervising deputy attorney general and acting senior assistant attorney general. During her time with the Department of Justice, Schwartz also served as a Supreme Court Fellow at the National Association of Attorneys General in 2007. Schwartz left the A.G.'s office in 2013 to serve as the deputy director and chief counsel for the California Department of Public Health. She would remain there until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2019.

While on the bench, Judge Schwartz has presided over a general civil calendar at the Hayward Hall of Justice.
