Judge Lorenzo A. Mejia - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Lorenzo A. Mejia (Ret.) served as a judge for the 1st Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon. Mejia was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Kitzhaber in 2002, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Ross Davis. He retired on December 31, 2022.

The 1st Judicial District encompasses Jackson County.

Prior to his appointment, Mejia was a staff attorney for Southern Oregon Public Defender, Inc. Before that, he spent time as a research attorney for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Mejia earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Oregon. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Oregon School of Law in 1986.

After graduating from law school, Mejia began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. James R. Hargreaves of the Lane County Circuit Court.

Born in Mexico, Mejia relocated to the United States alongside his family when he was three years old. His father drove spikes into railroad tracks, eventually settling the family in Reedsport, Oregon. Mejia has also lived in North Bend, Oregon, with his mother working for the fish canneries in Charleston. A resident of Medford, Oregon, at the time of his appointment to the bench, Mejia and his wife, Cristina, have one daughter. Cristina has worked as an attorney in private practice as well as a court mediator.
