Judge Mark A. Peterson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Mark A. Peterson is a referee for the 4th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Multnomah County. He joined the bench in 2018.

Peterson hears dockets involving evictions, small claims, stalking, protective orders, and traffic.

In addition to his judicial position, he is the Executive Director of the Oregon Council on Court Procedures, having served in that capacity since 2005. Over the course of his legal career, Peterson also served as regional co-director of the Klamath Falls regional office of Oregon Legal Services, Inc. (1982 to 1986) and the directing attorney for Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, Inc. in the Champaign (1981 to 1982) and Cairo (1979 to 1981) offices in Illinois.

He also taught as a clinical professor at Lewis & Clark Law School (1987 to 2016).

Peterson received a B.A. in political science and economics from Portland State University in 1973. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Toledo College of Law in 1976.

Peterson sat as a member of the Multnomah Bar Association Professionalism Committee and the Multnomah County Democratic Party Rules Committee.
