Judge Martha D. Anderson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Martha D. Anderson is a judge for the Sixth Circuit Court of Michigan in Oakland County. She was elected to the bench on November 5, 2002.

During her judicial tenure, Anderson has presided over the Oakland County Circuit Civil/Criminal Division (2010 to present) and the Oakland County Circuit Family Division (2003 to 2009). She has also served as Chief Circuit Judge Pro Tempore.

Prior to her election, Anderson was an Oakland County Circuit Court Friend of the Court referee, a position she held since 1979. In addition to serving as a referee, she also spent twenty-five years as a private practice attorney.

Anderson received a B.A. from Wayne State University in 1973. She went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Detroit, Mercy School of Law in 1977.

Anderson was a past president of the Michigan Judges Association. Her other memberships have included the Michigan State Bar Foundation (Fellow), the Oakland County Bar Foundation (Fellow), the Oakland County Bar Association, the Italian American Bar Association of Michigan (past president), and the American Inns of Court.

She also sat on the Michigan Judges Association Executive Committee and Criminal Law Committee. In addition, Anderson was appointed to the Michigan Community Corrections Board and served as a member of the Michigan Department of Humans Services Juvenile Justice Competency Legislation Workgroup and the Michigan Department of Corrections Presentence Investigation Report/COMPAS Workgroup.

Among her many accolades, Anderson is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Oakland County Prosecuting Attorney, the Honorable Robert E. Weiss Award for Excellence in Court Improvement, the Arthur Eugene Moore Champion of Children Award from the Family Division of the Oakland County Circuit Court, and the President’s Award and the Honor Banner Award of Distinction from the Italian American Bar Association of Michigan.
