Judge Mary Beth Kelly - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Mary Beth Kelly is a judge for the Third Circuit Court in Michigan. She was elected to the bench on November 3, 2020.

Prior to her election, Kelly was a private mediator and arbitrator for JAMS in Detroit, a position to which she was named in 2017. Before that, she spent time as Vice Chair of the Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Practice at Bodman PLC (2015 to 2017), where she focused on business litigation, government relations, and public affairs.

Kelly earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Dearborn. She then completed a J.D. at Notre Dame Law School in 1987.

After graduating from law school, Kelly entered into private practice, handling commercial litigation matters as an associate and a partner at Dickinson Wright. She then began her judicial career as a judge for the Third Circuit Court. Kelly was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Engler in 1999. She served in that capacity until 2011, at which time she was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court. Kelly retired from the bench on October 1, 2015.

Her memberships have included the Michigan Committee on Juvenile Justice and the Michigan Race Equity Coalition. She has also served as an advisor to Vista Maria and the University of Michigan’s Detroit Center for Family Advocacy.

She is a recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Council, the Child Advocate of the Year Award from Vista Maria, and the Advocate of the Year Award from the Ennis Center for Children.

A resident of Grosse Ile, Kelly is a member of Sacred Heart-Grosse Ile Parish. She and her husband, Kevin, have one son. When not presiding over legal proceedings, she enjoys running competitively.

She is registered as a Republican.
