Judge Mary M. Work - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Mary M. Work (Ret.) was a judge for the Ulster County Surrogate’s Court in the Third Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the seat in 2005 and retained in the 2014 election. She reached the mandatory age for retirement in 2016.

Previously, Work sat as an Ulster County Family Court judge (1990 to 2000; 2001 to 2004) and was appointed to serve as an acting justice of the Ulster County Supreme Court (1999 to 2000).

She received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. Work also completed a J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1972.

After law school, she worked as a staff attorney with the Bronx Legal Services from 1972 to 1978. Her legal career also includes a stint in private practice (1986 to 1990) as well as serving as a staff attorney with the Ulster County Department of Social Services (1988 to 1990).

Her husband, Vic Work, served as the Ulster County Democratic Elections Commissioner.
