Judge Mathew K. McCarthy: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Mathew K. McCarthy is a judge on the Steuben County Court Multi-Bench in the 7th Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the bench on November 5, 2024, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Philip J. Roche.

Prior to his election, McCarthy was a judge on the Corning City Court, a position to which he was elected in 2014. During his tenure there, he held assignments as an acting judge for the Steuben County Court Multi-Bench.

McCarthy earned a B.A. in political science and history from St. Bonaventure University in 2001. He then completed a J.D. at Albany Law School in 2004. He is licensed to practice in New York (2005).

After graduating from law school, McCarthy began his legal career as an attorney in private practice, working alongside his father at McCarthy Law in Bath. He supplemented his practice with service as an assistant district attorney for the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office, representing children as an attorney for the child in family court proceedings (2007 to 2014).

A lifelong resident of Steuben County, McCarthy attended Avoca Central School. He and his wife, Jolie, have lived in Corning, New York, for more than twenty years.

He is registered as a Republican.
