Judge Michael P. Villani - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Michael P. Villani is a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. He assumed the bench in 2007 and was retained in subsequent elections.

Villani received a B.A. in psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1979. He went on to earn a J.D. from California Western School of Law in 1982.

After law school, Villani worked as a deputy district attorney until leaving the public sector to enter into private practice.

During his tenure in private practice, Villani handled both criminal and civil cases including criminal defense, personal injury, and insurance defense matters. In addition to his practice, he was appointed to serve as an alternate municipal court judge, pro tem Justice of the Peace, small claims court judge, and a certified court arbitrator (1993 to 2007).

Villani was also appointed to serve on the Fee Dispute Committee and Disciplinary Board by the State Bar of Nevada.

While on the bench, he has presided in the Criminal Division and has served as a group facilitator and leader for the National Judicial College General Jurisdiction course for new judges. He was also a group facilitator and leader for their Advanced Ethics For Judges and Advanced Search and Seizure Law courses.

Villani has served on the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court’s Executive Committee.

He and his wife have six children.
