Judge Michelle P. Bassi - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Michelle P. Bassi is a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Kate Brown in 2022, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Charles Carlson.

The 2nd Judicial District encompasses Lane County.

Prior to her appointment, Bassi was a civil litigator at Thorp, Purdy, Jewett, Urness & Wilkinson, a law firm based in Springfield. She joined the firm in 2013, specializing in complex civil litigation, misdemeanor defense, and Title IX administrative matters.

Bassi earned a bachelor’s degree in art history from Bowdoin College and a master’s degree in international studies from the University of Oregon. She then completed a J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law. As a law student, she clerked for the Southern Environmental Law Center and Earthjustice.

After graduating from law school, Bassi spent time as a law clerk to the Hon. Douglas Mitchell and the Hon. Jodie Mooney of the 2nd Judicial District Circuit Court. She was also a public defender for the Umpqua Valley Public Defender’s Office in Roseburg.

Her memberships have included the Lane County Bar Association, Oregon Women Lawyers, and the Springfield Education Foundation Board. She has also been involved with the Oregon Elder Abuse Prevention Work Group, the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association, the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and the American Association for Justice.
