Biography

Hon. Nathaniel Hales is a special judge for the Cleveland County District Court (District 21) in Oklahoma. He was appointed to the bench by the Twenty-First Judicial District judges in 2020, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Steven Stice (Ret.).

Before joining the bench, Hales worked for seven years as an assistant district attorney in Cleveland County (2013 to 2020). Prior to his appointment, he spent seven months as a member of the civil team, tasked with representing Cleveland County elected officials and the county’s best interests. During his tenure as a prosecutor, he was also assigned to the criminal docket and handled cases in the juvenile and civil dockets. In addition, Hales served on occasion as the assistant district attorney for the Anna McBride Court, a mental health court in Cleveland County.

He received a B.S. in education from Baylor University in 2002. Hales then spent almost four years as an elementary school teacher in Forney, Texas, before completing a J.D. at the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 2013. While a law student, he was an intern with the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office.

He attended J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia. Hales and his wife, Heather, have three children.
