Judge Patrick W. Henry - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Patrick W. Henry is a judge for the 4th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Multnomah County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Kate Brown in 2015.

Henry has held an assignment in the Family Law Department and handles family law, probate, and juvenile law cases. He also shares responsibility with other judges for the criminal misdemeanor and restraining order cases that involve domestic violence charges.

Prior to his appointment, Henry was a senior assistant county attorney with the Multnomah County Attorney’s Office. He first joined the office in 1999. During his tenure, Henry served as general counsel to the Department of County Human Services, as well as on the Interagency Committee on Abuse Prevention, the Law Enforcement/Adult Protective Services Multidisciplinary Team, and the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team. He is also credited with spearheading the passing of HB 3323, which provided the County Attorney’s Office the authority to seek civil penalties against individuals who committed physical or financial abuse against elderly and disabled residents.

Henry received a B.A. in environmental science and geology from the University of Virginia. He then taught high school earth science and geology in Fairfax, Virginia, for two years and served as a volunteer with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps before completing a J.D. at Notre Dame Law School. Henry was a Thomas J. White Scholar and sat as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Law, Ethics, and Public Policy.

After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as an attorney at Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt in 1993. Henry remained with the firm until joining the Multnomah County Attorney’s Office.

The second of seven children, he grew up in Washington, D.C. His father worked as a civilian employee for the Navy, and his mother was a math teacher. Henry and his wife, Mary Ann, have four grown children.
