Biography

Hon. Paul R. Van Grunsven is a judge for the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in the First Judicial District of Wisconsin. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jim Doyle in 2004, filling the vacancy created by the appointment of the Hon. Louis Butler to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.


Van Grunsven has served as presiding judge for the Civil/Probate Courts.


Prior to his appointment, he was an attorney at Kasdorf, Lewis & Swietlik, S.C., where he was chair of the Health Law Section. Van Grunsven also taught as an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School.


He received a B.S. from Marquette University in 1983. Van Grunsven went on to complete a J.D. at Marquette University Law School (1986) and an LL.M. in health law from DePaul University College of Law (1995).


He was admitted to practice in Wisconsin (1986), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.


Van Grunsven has held memberships with the Milwaukee Bar Association and American Bar Association. He was also chair of the Review Panel for the State Office of Lawyer Regulation.


At the time of his appointment, Van Grunsven resided in Bayside, Wisconsin.
