Biography

The Hon. Peter P. Sweeney is a Justice for the Kings County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the Second Judicial District of New York. Sweeney was initially elected to the Civil Court of the City of New York in Kings County in 2002. Then, in 2010, he was designated to the Kings County Supreme Court by Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau.

After serving as supervising judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York in Kings County, Sweeney was elected to the Kings County Supreme Court in 2016.

Sweeney earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Marywood University. He then completed a J.D. at the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in 1985.

After graduating from law school, Sweeney entered into private practice, joining his father as an insurance defense associate at Sheft, Wright & Sweeney. Eight years later, he later started his own private practice with Jeffrey Schwimmer, specializing in the plaintiff’s side of personal injury law.

Sweeney was raised in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School. His mother was a homemaker and his father, Eugene Sweeney, worked as a defense attorney.

He is registered as a Democrat.
