Judge Richard A. Erwood - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Richard A. Erwood (Ret.) was a judge for the Riverside County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis in 2003. He retired from the bench in 2018 and his vacancy was filled by the Hon. Gregory J. Olson.

Erwood received his bachelor's degree from Central Washington University. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court, Erwood was a supervising deputy district attorney with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, a position he had held since 1987. In that position, Erwood was responsible for supervising multiple divisions with the D.A.'s office including the Juvenile Division, the Family Violence Unit, the Major Narcotics Vertical Prosecution Unit, the Felony Trial and Homicide Teams, and the Gang Unit. It was his second stint at the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, having worked as a deputy district attorney there from 1974 to 1984. He rejoined the D.A.'s office after working briefly in private practice.

Erwood was a member of the Palm Desert Planning Commission and a hearing officer for the Rent Review Commission for both Palm Desert and Indio.
