Judge Stephen A. Bucaria: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Stephen A. Bucaria (Ret.) served as a justice on the Nassau County Supreme Court in the 10th Judicial District of New York. Bucaria was elected to the bench on November 4, 1995, and re-elected on November 3, 2009. He retired in 2020.

Prior to his election, Bucaria was a judge on the Nassau County District Court, a position to which he was seated in 1993. Before that, he worked for the New York State Unified Court System, serving as a law secretary to the Hon. Gabriel Kohn of the New York State Court of Claims (1987 to 1989) and the Hon. Angelo D. Roncallo of the Nassau County Supreme Court (1990 to 1993).

Bucaria earned a B.A. from Fairfield University (1970) and an M.A. in criminal justice from the State University of New York at Albany (1971). He then worked as a legislative assistant to John R. Dunne of the New York State Senate before completing a J.D. at Hofstra University, Maurice A. Deane School of Law, in 1976.

He was licensed to practice in New York (1977).

After graduating from law school, Bucaria began his legal career as an assistant district attorney with the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 1979, at which time he opened his own private practice as a sole practitioner.

His memberships have included the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Rockville Centre, the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick, and the Irish in Government. He has also been involved with the New York State Guard, serving as a judge advocate with the Civil and Military Affairs Unit, an acting commander of the 13th Regiment, and an acting commander of the 54th Civil Affairs Brigade.

He is registered as a Republican.
