Judge Steven H. Gibbs - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Steven H. Gibbs is a judge for the Chippewa County Circuit Court in Wisconsin. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Scott Walker on December 14, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Roderick Cameron.

Prior to his appointment, Gibbs was the District Attorney for Chippewa County, a position to which he was named in 2012. Before that, he was a managing partner of Hertel & Gibbs in Eau Claire (1995 to 2012).

Gibbs earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1984. He then completed a J.D. at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in 1988.

After graduating from law school, Gibbs began his legal career as a juvenile and district court referee for the Hennepin County District Court System in Minneapolis. He served in that capacity until 1991.

His memberships have included the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, the Minnesota Bar Association, and the Eau Claire County Bar Association. He has also been involved with Reach, the NRA Foundation, the Chippewa Free Legal Clinic, and the Eau Claire Free Legal Clinic.

Raised in Chippewa County, Gibbs attended Chippewa Falls Senior High School.
