Judge Steven P. Meyer: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Steven P. Meyer is a judge for the Tippecanoe County Superior Court in Indiana. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014.


Prior to his election, Meyer was a shareholder and managing partner at Ball Eggleston, a law firm he joined in 2001. During his tenure there, he represented clients in personal injury, family law, criminal law, and general litigation matters.


Meyer earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from St. Joseph’s College in 1981. He then completed a J.D. at Indiana University, Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1984. As a law student, Meyer interned with the Indiana Legislative Services Agency.


After graduating from law school, Meyer entered into private practice at Merritt Troemel Meyer & Hamilton. He worked in that capacity until 1996, at which time he transferred to Rosenthal Grieves O'Bryan & Meyer. Meyer supplemented his practice with service as a deputy public defender for the Tippecanoe County Public Defender’s Office (1987 to 2001).


His memberships have included the Lafayette City Council. He has also been involved with the March of Dimes, United Way, the Area IV Council on Aging Housing Development, the Friendship House, and the Lafayette Urban Enterprise Association.


Raised in Lafayette, Indiana, Meyer attended Central Catholic High School. His family has lived in Tippecanoe County since the 1850s, when his great-great-grandfather purchased farmland in Perry Township. His great-grandfather would eventually establish Meyer's Grocery Store, which his grandfather continued to operate for thirty-five years.


He is registered as a Democrat.
