Judge Susan Clancy Boles - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Susan Clancy Boles is a circuit judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois in Kane County. She was appointed to the position in 2008.

Boles is the Presiding Judge of the Civil Division and was the former Chief Judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit Court (2015 to 2019). Her other assignments have included the Criminal Felony Division (2012 to 2015); Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Division, Delinquency (2010 to 2012); and Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Division, Abuse and Neglect (2008 to 2009). Boles began her judicial career as an associate judge of the court, having been appointed in 2007.

Prior to joining the bench, she was a partner in the Clancy Law Offices (1993 to 2007), where she gained litigation experience with civil jury trials. Before that, she was a litigation associate at Rooks, Pitts & Poust (1990 to 1993). Boles began with the firm as a summer associate while in law school (1989 to 1990).

She received a B.A. in communication from Vanderbilt University in 1987. Boles went on to complete a J.D. at Valparaiso University School of Law in 1990. She was admitted to practice in Illinois (1990), the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (1991), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Her memberships have included the Illinois Judges Association Board of Directors.

Boles was vice chair of the Conference of Circuit Court Chief Judges and served on its Associate Judge Vacancy Committee and Extended Media Coverage Special Committee (chair). She also sat on the Illinois Judicial College Standing Committee on Judicial Education, the Judicial Administrative Task Force, and the Judicial Mentor Committee of the New Judge Mentoring Program. In addition, she was co-chair of the Judges Association's Worries of the World Wide Web, In-School Programs Committee, and served on the Editorial Board of “The Gavel.”

Boles is the recipient of the Everyday Hero Award from the Kane County Chronicle in 2015.

Boles was born and raised in Kane County, where her family operated a law practice in St. Charles. She attended St. Charles High School.

She is registered as a Republican.
