Judge Susan L. Hubbard - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Susan L. Hubbard is a judge for the Third Circuit Court in Michigan. She was elected to the bench on November 2, 2010, and re-elected on November 8, 2016.

Hubbard earned a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in 1985. She spent the next several years working as a congressional analyst for the United States General Accounting Office before completing a J.D. at the Detroit College of Law in 1990. She was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1991.

After graduating from law school, Hubbard entered into private practice, representing clients in the probate, family, criminal, and district courts in Wayne County. She also spent time as a tribunal mediator and a representative of social security claimants.

Her memberships have included the Wayne County Commission (1989 to 2004). In that capacity, she authored an Ethics Ordinance against corruption as well as the first Airport Noise Abatement Program. The latter resulted in the re-development of the Detroit-Metro Airport in 2003. She also sat on the Dearborn City Council.

Hubbard is the granddaughter of Orville Hubbard, the Mayor of Dearborn from 1942 to 1978. Orville was a segregationist, opposing the integration of neighborhoods in the city.
