Judge Thomas A. McHill - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Thomas A. McHill is a judge for the 23rd Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Linn County. He was elected to the bench on November 2, 2010, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Glen D. Baisinger (Ret.).

During his judicial tenure, McHill has served as Presiding Judge of the 23rd Judicial District Circuit Court since 2018 and presided over the Linn County Drug Court.

Prior to joining the bench, he spent twenty-two years as the City Attorney for the City of Lebanon (1988 to 2010) and was in private practice at Morley, Thomas & McHill, LLC (1981 to 2010). McHill was named a managing member of the firm in 1995, and his areas of practice included criminal defense, family law, business, and civil litigation, including auto accidents and negligence cases.

He received a B.A. in history and political science from Willamette University in 1975. McHill went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1981. While a law student, he interned at the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office (1978 to 1981).

He was admitted to practice in Oregon (1981) and the United States District Court for the District of Oregon (1981).

From a civic standpoint, McHill has been involved with the Lebanon Community School Board and the Rotary Club of Albany.

He was named Lebanon’s Man of the Year in 2010 and was Lebanon’s Junior First Citizen in 1992.

McHill is a longtime resident of Lebanon.
