Judge Thomas M. Cushing - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Thomas M. Cushing is a Circuit Judge for the Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County. He was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2019, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Nicholas R. Ford. Judge Cushing is currently assigned to the Domestic Violence Division.

Cushing earned a B.A. in English and Government from the University of Notre Dame in 1983, then spent several years teaching sixth grade in Humboldt Park. He completed his J.D. at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1988 and was admitted to the Illinois Bar the same year.

After graduating from law school, Cushing went into private practice. He worked as a trial attorney at Ambrose & Cushing until 2005, representing plaintiffs in personal injury matters. He left to start his own private practice, specializing in general civil litigation and chancery matters. He remained principal at the firm until his appointment to the bench.

While in private practice, Cushing also served as the Senior Vice President of Chicago Climate Exchange from 2006 to 2010, the Managing Director of Strategic Partnership and Policy at the Delta Institute from 2012 to 2013, and Of Counsel for Christopher A. Kreid & Associates from 2013 to 2019.

His memberships have included the Hearing Board of the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) and the Moran Center Legal Clinic Board. He has served as a mediator for the Law and Chancery Divisions of the Cook County Circuit Court and as a pro bono attorney for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services.

Raised in Chicago’s Northwest side, Cushing’s parents were founding parishioners at St. Mary of the Woods in Edgebrook. He and his brother helped co-found an immigration amnesty clinic in the Humboldt Park area.
