Judge Timothy P. Connors - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Timothy P. Connors is a judge for the Twenty-Second Circuit Court of Michigan in Washtenaw County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Engler in March 1997, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Karl V. Fink (Ret.).

Prior to his appointment, Connors presided as a judge for the Fifteenth District Court, a position he was appointed to in 1991. During his judicial tenure, he served for eleven years as a Chief Judge and was appointed to serve as a judge pro tem for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. Connors is also the presiding judge of the Washtenaw County Peacemaking Court and presides over the Civil and Criminal Divisions as well as the Neglect and Abuse Docket of the Juvenile Court. He is credited with incorporating peacemaking principles, philosophies, and procedures shared by tribal communities into the State Court justice system for individuals who have ongoing relationships after their time with the court is complete.

Prior to joining the bench, he was vice-president of Logeman, Connors & Bredell, P.C. Before his time there, Connors was an attorney at Conlin, Conlin, McKenney & Philbrick. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School and has been a faculty member and lecturer at the University of Michigan Law School. In addition, Connors was on the faculty of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education and served as a guest lecturer for Cooley Law School and Eastern Michigan University.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1977. Connors went on to complete a J.D. at Wayne State University Law School in 1980.

His memberships have included the Michigan Judges Association. Connors was elected chairman of the Board of Eversight, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to the restoration of sight, and is a member of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges Tribal Leadership Forum. He was also appointed by the Native American Rights Fund to serve as a member of the Indigenous Peacemaking Initiative in 2017.

He is the recipient of the Reverand Thomas H. Smith Humanitarian Service Award from the Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church (2016), the Hilda Gage Judicial Excellence Award from the Michigan Judges Association (2015), the Blair Moody Award for Significant Contributions to Judicial Excellence, the Peace Builder Award from the Dispute Resolution Center, the Patriot Award from the Washtenaw County Bar Association, and the Child Welfare Jurist of the Year Award from the Foster Care Review Board (2014). Connors was also awarded the Tecumseh Peacekeeping Award for Dedicated Service to Protecting Rights of American Indians from the Michigan State Bar Indian Law Section.

He and his wife, Margaret, have a blended family of four.
