Judge Vito M. DeStefano - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Vito M. DeStefano is a Justice of the Nassau County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the Supreme Court bench in 2008. Previously, Justice DeStefano served as a judge for the Nassau County District Court, First District from 2004 to 2007. While on the Supreme Court, he has presided in the Commercial Division of the Nassau County Supreme Court.

Justice DeStefano graduated with his B.A. in philosophy and religious studies from Wagner College. He went on to earn his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1996.

Prior to his election to the District Court, DeStefano practiced insurance and appellate litigation as a senior associate at Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman, and Dicker from 1999 to 2003. Before joining the firm, he had worked as a senior appellate court attorney with the Supreme Court of the State of New York Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department.

He has also taught as an adjunct professor at Molloy College, Hofstra University, and Long Island University C.W. Post School of Accountancy.

He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics.

Justice DeStefano was born in Brooklyn, New York.
