Judge Xiomara Y. Torres - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Xiomara Y. Torres is a judge for the 4th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Multnomah County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Kate Brown on April 1, 2017.

Torres presides in the Family Law Department.

Prior to her appointment, she spent fourteen years as a family law attorney. During that time, Torres worked as a senior assistant attorney general with the Oregon Department of Justice (2007 to 2017).

She received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. Torres went on to complete a J.D. at Lewis & Clark Law School.

Torres, who was born in El Salvador, entered the United States at the age of nine with her mother and siblings as an undocumented immigrant in 1980. After they settled in East Los Angeles, California, she was removed from her family and placed into foster care when she was thirteen. Despite her struggles, Torres went on to become a U.S. citizen. Her life’s journey was chronicled by Milta Ortiz in a play entitled, “Judge Torres,” which premiered at The Milagro Theatre in Portland in 2019.
