Judge Alison McCarty - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Alison McCarty is a judge for the General Division of the Summit County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. She was elected to the bench on November 4, 2008.

McCarty has presided as a judge for the Summit County ReEntry Court, which monitors recently released offenders to ensure that they transition to a safe and sober lifestyle. She has also sat on the Akron Municipal Drug Court (2003 to 2007).

Prior to her election, McCarty sat as a judge for the Akron Municipal Court, a position to which she was selected in 1999. Before that, she was an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office (1989 to 1999) and a staff attorney for the Hon. William Baird of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (1987 to 1989).

McCarty earned a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from Wheaton College in 1984. She then completed a J.D. at Wake Forest University School of Law in 1987.

Her memberships have included the Summit County Domestic Violence Coalition, the Summit County Fatality Review Committee, the Summit County Sexual Assault Coalition (chair), the Ohio Governor’s Task Force on the Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse, and the Board of the Ohio Coalition on Sexual Assault.

She is a recipient of the Urban Light Award from the Department of Public Administration at the University of Akron (2005) as well as the Legacy III Criminal Justice Award for Outstanding Service (2006). She was also named Committee Chair of the Year by the Akron Bar Association (2002).

McCarty currently resides in Bath Township, Ohio. When not presiding over legal matters, she sits on the board of the Summit County Choral Society and sings in the choir at her church.
