Judge Anthony C. Epstein: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Anthony C. Epstein is an associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He was nominated to the bench by former President George W. Bush in January 2007 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Susan Rebecca Holmes. Epstein was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 1, 2008.

He served as Presiding Judge of the Civil Division and also held assignments in the Criminal Division and Family Court.

Prior to his nomination, Epstein was a partner at Steptoe & Johnson, LLP since 1999. Before that, he was associated with Jenner & Block, LLP (1983 to 1999) and Leva, Hawes, Symington, Martin & Oppenheimer (1981 to 1983). His areas of practice included civil and criminal litigation in state and federal courts and before federal agencies.

Epstein received a bachelor’s degree from Yale College in 1974. He then completed a J.D. at Yale Law School in 1977.

He was a member of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law (chair) and vice chair of the District of Columbia Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee. Epstein provided pro bono legal assistance as a volunteer in the Family Court’s Self-Help Center.

Epstein is a married father of two.
