Judge Audra Ibarra - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Audra Ibarra is a judge for the Santa Clara County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown on December 7, 2018. At the time of her appointment, she was the first Filipino-American judge to preside in the Bay Area.

Prior to her appointment, Ibarra was a sole practitioner in her own private practice, a law firm she opened in 2010. She supplemented her practice with service as counsel to the California Appellate Law Group (2012 to 2018).

Ibarra earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. She then completed a J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1994.

After graduating from law school, Ibarra entered into private practice. She worked as an associate at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro until 1997, at which time she became a deputy district attorney for the Solano County District Attorney’s Office.

Then, in 1999, Ibarra joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California as an Assistant United States Attorney. She worked in that capacity for two years before transferring to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California. During her tenure there, she rose through the ranks, quickly becoming Deputy Chief of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force in 2005.

Ibarra was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She briefly lived in the Philippines, where her father took a sabbatical from teaching at the University of Minnesota.
