Judge Barbara A. Curran - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Barbara A. Curran (Ret.) served as a judge for the Hudson County Superior Court (Vicinage 6) in New Jersey. Curran was appointed to the bench by former Governor James Florio in 1992. She retired on February 19, 2000, and provides pro bono legal services to veterans and their families.

Prior to her appointment, Curran was an attorney at Chubb & Son in Somerset County. Before that, she spent time as corporate vice president of Drexel Burnham Lambert.

Curran earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (1962) and a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University (1963). She then completed a J.D. at Seton Hall Law School in 1977. She is admitted to practice in New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Her memberships have included the boards of No Greater Sacrifice Foundation, Roots and Wings NJ, and CASA of NJ.

Born in New York City, Curran served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from the 24th Legislative District (1974 to 1980). She resigned from the Assembly when former Governor Brendan Byrne appointed her to a Republican seat on the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. She is the first woman to serve in all three branches of government in New Jersey.

She is registered as a Republican.
