Judge Belle B. Schumann: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Belle B. Schumann (Ret.) served as a judge for the Volusia County Court in Florida. Schumann was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jeb Bush in 2005. She retired on June 30, 2023.

Over the course of her judicial career, Schumann played an instrumental role in the creation of the Volusia County DUI Court and the SAVE Docket. The latter provides alternative sentencing for unhoused and indigent defendants, moving them away from incarceration and toward social services, treatment, and community service.

Schumann earned a bachelor’s degree from Stetson University. She then completed a J.D. at Florida State University College of Law. She was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1984.

After graduating from law school, Schumann began her legal career as an assistant attorney general with the Florida Attorney General’s Office. She served in that capacity until her appointment to the bench.

She is a recipient of the Chief Justice Award for Judicial Excellence from the Florida Supreme Court (2018).

Born at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, Schumann has resided in Volusia County for decades. She and her husband, Bill, have two sons.
