Judge Bernard Nachman: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Bernard Nachman (Ret.) served as a judge for the 4th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Nachman was elected to the bench in 1990. He retired in 2008.


The 4th Judicial Circuit encompasses Clay County, Duval County, and Nassau County.


Prior to his election, Nachman spent twenty years as an attorney in private practice, specializing in real estate matters. He supplemented his practice with service as an adjunct professor at the University of North Florida as well as an instructor at the College of Advanced Judicial Studies.


Nachman earned a B.A. in English language and literature from Tulane University in 1958. He then completed an LL.B. from Tulane University School of Law in 1961.


After graduating from law school, Nachman entered into private practice. He started as an attorney in the Law Office of Al Schneider, eventually leaving to join Hazard & Fernandez. Nachman handled family, tax, real estate, and business litigation matters.


Then, in 1965, Nachman left the private sector to join the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. He spent the next two years as an assistant United States attorney before becoming an assistant state attorney with the Office of the State Attorney for the 4th Judicial Circuit.


His memberships have included the Education Committee of the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges and the Supreme Court Trial Court Technology Committee. He has also been involved with the Chester Bedell American Inn of Court (president).
