Judge Bret M. Binder - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Bret M. Binder is a judge for the Chester County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench on November 7, 2017.

Prior to his election, Binder presided as a magisterial district judge for District 15-1-01, the busiest magisterial district court in Chester County. He served parts of West Chester and the Townships of East Bradford and West Bradford, sitting as the second vice president of District 11.

Binder earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, mechanical engineering, and mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. He then completed a J.D. at Villanova University, Charles Widger School of Law in 2004. As a law student, Binder served as a law clerk for the Hon. James R. Cavanaugh of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania.

After graduating from law school, Binder began his legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Sandra Schultz Newman of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He then entered into private practice two years later, working as an associate at Conrad O'Brien Gellman & Rohn. His time there was brief. The following year, he became the founder and managing partner of Binder & Canno. During this time, he specialized in commercial litigation, real estate, and business law matters.

His memberships have included the West Chester Area School District Board and the Rules Committee of the Special Court Judges Association. He has also been involved with Chester County OIC, which focuses on adult literacy.

Binder has co-authored a book on evidence with his father, David Binder. The most recent edition is “Binder on Pennsylvania Evidence.”
