Judge Brian R. Sullivan - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Brian R. Sullivan is a judge for the Third Circuit Court in Michigan. He was elected to the bench on November 3, 1998.

Prior to his election, Sullivan was of counsel to Thomas, DeGrood & Witenoff, a law firm he joined in 1990. Before that, she spent time as an attorney at ANR Pipeline and Rutledge, Manion, Rabaut, Terry & Thomas. Sullivan specialized in civil and criminal trials and appeals, focusing on sports law.

Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Monteith College in 1977. He then completed a J.D. at the Detroit College of Law (1983) and a master’s degree in philosophy from the Holy Apostles College and Seminary (2008).

After graduating from law school, Sullivan entered into private practice, working as an associate at Kitch Suhrheinrich. However, his time there was brief. Later that year, he joined the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, where he served as an assistant prosecuting attorney until 1988.

Sullivan supplemented his practice with service as the Director of the Free Legal Services for Indigents under Monsignor Clement Kern of the Holy Trinity Legal Clinic (1979 to 1998). He also taught research writing and advocacy at the Detroit College of Law (1982 to 1990).

His memberships have included the Michigan State Bar Foundation, the National Conference of Metropolitan Courts, and the Incorporated Society of Irish-American Lawyers. He was also involved with the Committee on Model Civil Jury Instructions and the Committee on Model Criminal Jury Instructions.
