Judge Bruce J. Kaplan - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Bruce J. Kaplan is a judge for the Vicinage 8 Superior Court in Middlesex County in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Chris Christie in 2014.

Since assuming the bench, Kaplan has held assignments in the Family Division in Essex, Mercer, and Middlesex Counties and the Civil Division in Middlesex County.

At the time of his appointment, he was working as counsel to the Director of Criminal Justice in the Division of Criminal Justice of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, a position he had held since 2013.

Before that, Kaplan worked for eleven years as the Middlesex County prosecutor, since his appointment to the position in 2002.

His legal career also included acting as county counsel in Middlesex beginning in 1996 and practicing as a partner in the law firm of Gluck, Kelso & Kaplan (1990 to 1992) and Kelso & Kaplan (1992 to 2002). He first joined the firm, then known as Gluck & Kelso, as an associate attorney.

Kaplan received a B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1980. He went on to complete a J.D. at Rutgers Law School in 1983.

Kaplan was a resident of Highland Park at the time of his appointment to the bench.
