Judge Carolyn E. Demarest - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Carolyn E. Demarest (Ret.) served as a judge for the Kings County Supreme Court in the Second Judicial District of New York. Demarest was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mario Cuomo in 1990. She retired in 2016 and joined JAMS as a private mediator and arbitrator.

Demarest began her judicial career as an interim judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York, a position to which she was appointed by former Mayor Edward Koch in 1983. Two years later, she transferred to the Family Court of the City of New York, where she presided over matrimonial and family law matters. Shortly after her elevation to the Supreme Court, Demarest held assignments in the Commercial Division, playing an instrumental role in the development of the new division from 2002 to 2016.

Demarest earned a B.A. from New York University in 1967. She then completed a J.D. at New York Law School in 1972.

After graduating from law school, Demarest began her legal career as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. During her tenure there, she specialized in corporate and litigation matters.

Demarest left the firm and became a law clerk for the Hon. Stanley Danzig of the Civil Court of the City of New York. She was subsequently selected to serve as Assistant Chief of the Appeals Division of the New York City Corporation Counsel, where she spent the next seven years representing the municipality in constitutional, administrative, labor, torts, contracts, education, and civil service matters.

Her memberships have included the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association, the American College of Business Court Judges, the Brooklyn Bar Association, the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, the Supreme Court Justices Association of the City of New York, and the New York State Association of Women Judges.

She is a recipient of the Hon. William Bellard Award from the Catholic Lawyers Guild (2009), the New York State Bar Association Section of Federal and Commercial Litigation Award (2005), the Jurist of the Year Award from the Metropolitan Black Bar Association (2005), and the Ruth E. Moskowitz Award from the Kings County Supreme Court (2005).
