Judge Colleen A. Falkowski - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Colleen A. Falkowski is a judge for the Lake County Court of Common Pleas (Domestic Relations Division) in Ohio. She was elected to the bench in November 2002 and re-elected in 2008 and 2014.

During her tenure in the Domestic Relations Division, Falkowski worked in conjunction with the Legal Aid Society and the Lake County Bar Association to create the Pro Se Divorce Clinics in 2013. The clinic assists individuals with uncomplicated cases who are seeking a divorce.

She was appointed by the Hon. Maureen O’Connor, Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, to serve as a member of the Supreme Court’s Commission on Dispute Resolution and its Advisory Committee on Children, Families, and the Courts.

Falkowski received a B.A. from Ursuline College. She went on to complete a J.D. at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. She was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1979.

Prior to her election to the bench, Falkowski was a supervising attorney in the Child Support Division of the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, a position she had held since 1997.

Before that, she worked as a staff attorney in the Child Support Enforcement Division of the Lake County Department of Human Services (1988 to 1997) and an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office (1979 to 1988).

Her memberships have included the Ohio Association of Domestic Relations Judges (treasurer and past president), the Ohio Judicial College Domestic Relations Practice and Procedure Committee (founding member), the Ohio Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (board member), the Lake County Bar Association, the National Child Support Enforcement Association, and the Ohio Family Support Association.

Falkowski received the Presidential Award from the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation for Pro Bono Service (2015), the Chief Justice Richard W. Holmes Award for Merit from the American Judges Association (2015), and the Leadership Lake County’s Leader of the Year award (2015).
