Judge Cory L. Atkins - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Cory L. Atkins is a judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Mike Parson on September 26, 2019, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jack R. Grate.

Prior to his appointment, Atkins served as an associate judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit, a position to which he was named in 2018. Before that, he spent time as an attorney at Langdon & Emison (2016 to 2018), the Accurso Law Firm (2012 to 2016), and Foland, Wickens, Eisfelder, Roper & Hofer (2010 to 2012). He specialized in banking disputes, employment discrimination suits, insurance coverage litigation, and complex products liability cases.

Atkins earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Rockhurst University in 2004. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 2007.

After graduating from law school, Atkins began his legal career as an assistant attorney general for the Missouri Office of the Attorney General. He served in that capacity until 2008, handling license revocation hearings on behalf of the Missouri Gaming Commission and the Missouri Board of Healing Arts as well as campaign finance matters before the Missouri Ethics Commission. He then became a law clerk to the Hon. Zel M. Fischer of the Supreme Court of Missouri.

His memberships have included the American Association for Justice, the Association for Women Lawyers of Greater Kansas City, the Kansas Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Missouri Bar Association, the Kansas City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the National Courts and Sciences Institute.

Born and raised in Independence, Missouri, Atkins attended Independence Public Schools. He is an Eagle Scout.
