Judge Courtney M. Chaplin: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Courtney M. Chaplin is a judge for the Windham Judicial District Superior Court in Connecticut. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Dannel Malloy on May 3, 2018.

Prior to his appointment, Chaplin was a deputy assistant state’s attorney with the Connecticut Office of the State’s Attorney. During his tenure there, he held assignments in the Division of Criminal Justice, handling judicial pretrial, arraignment, regular, probation review, and motor vehicle cases. Before that, he was a special deputy assistant state's attorney in the Civil Litigation Bureau (2014 to 2015).

Chaplin earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and government with concentrations in political theory and international relations from Wofford College in 2007. He then completed a J.D. at Howard University School of Law in 2010.

After graduating from law school, Chaplin began his legal career as a law clerk for the Connecticut Appellate Court. Then, in 2013, he entered into private practice, working as an associate in a small insurance defense firm in Hartford.

His memberships have included the George W. Crawford Black Bar Association (treasurer) and the Connecticut Bar Association. He has served on the latter’s Statewide Opioid Task Force and its Legislative Policy and Review Committee.

He was a resident of Manchester, Connecticut, at the time of his appointment.
