The Hon. Craig C. DeThomasis is a judge for the 8th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2019, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Stanley H. Griffis, III.
The 8th Judicial Circuit encompasses Alachua County, Baker County, Bradford County, Gilchrist County, Levy County, and Union County. DeThomasis has held assignments in Alachua County and Levy County, presiding over family, domestic violence, juvenile dependency, probate, mental health, risk protection, civil, mortgage foreclosure, and extraordinary writs matters.
DeThomasis earned a B.S. in finance from the University of Florida in 1980. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law, in 1983.
After graduating from law school, DeThomasis joined the Office of the Public Defender for the Eighth Judicial Circuit, where he served as an assistant public defender for four years. Then, in 1987, he entered into private practice, working as a partner at DeThomasis and Buchanan. He supplemented his practice by teaching as an adjunct professor at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law.
His memberships have included the J.C. Adkins American Inn of Court and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Eighth Judicial Circuit Chapter. He has chaired the Eighth Judicial Circuit Grievance Committee, and he has lectured on subjects ranging from how to cross-examine witnesses to criminal law.
DeThomasis received the Meritorious Public Service Award from The Florida Bar in 1997 and 2006.
