Judge D. Chris Cook - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. D. Chris Cook is a judge for the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 8, 2016.

Cook received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1987. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Toledo College of Law in 1992.

Prior to joining the bench, Cook had worked for eleven years as a magistrate for the Lorain Municipal Court and an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office for five.

Cook also worked for twelve years as a Sheffield Village prosecutor and spent time in private practice at Cook & Nicol, LLC. In addition, he served as bar counsel for the Lorain County Bar Association, an acting judge for the Avon Lake Municipal Court, and a special prosecutor for the City of Vermilion.

His memberships have included the Ohio State Bar Association (Board of Governors) and the Lorain County Bar Association (past president).

Cook has been a member of the Ohio Board of Professional Conduct since 2017 and was elected its vice-chair in 2020. He also sat on the Lorain County Bar Association’s New Lawyer’s Admissions Committee (chairman) and the Certified Ethics and Grievance Committee.

His other memberships included the Lorain Branch of the NAACP, the Coalition for Hispanic/Latino Issues and Progress (C.H.I.P.S.), the Sheffield Village Lions Club, the Sheffield Village Historical Society, and the National Rifle Association.

Cook also acted as pro bono counsel to the Lorain County Volunteer Guardianship Program.

He was born in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Lorain High School. Cook and his wife, Jessica, have two children.

He is registered as a Democrat.
