Judge Daniel E. Haughey - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Daniel E. Haughey is a judge for the Butler County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the seat in November 2020.

Prior to that, Haughey had presided as a judge for the Butler County Area III Court since 2008. During his tenure on the Area Court, he was credited with establishing a Treatment Alternative Court (TAC) and a Drug Court, both of which were certified by the Ohio Supreme Court Commission on Specialized Dockets.

He received a B.A. in English literature and political science from Miami University in 1997. Haughey went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 2000. While a law student, he received the Judge John W. Peck Trial Practice Award.

After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office, where he handled cases in Area I Court (Oxford) and II Court (Hamilton). Haughey then accepted a full-time position as the city prosecutor for the City of Hamilton before beginning his solo practice in 2003. After that, he transitioned into a part-time prosecutor for the City of Hamilton.

In 2007, he formed Haughey and Deters, LLC along with fellow attorney, Dennis Deters, and later merged his practice with Rittgers & Rittgers in 2017. He remained in private practice until assuming the Common Pleas bench, and his areas of practice included trial work in both criminal and civil matters, including serving fifteen years as labor counsel for FOP Lodge 38.

In addition to his private practice work, Haughey was appointed magistrate for the Hamilton County Municipal Court in 2006.

He has also taught as a visiting assistant professor of Business Legal Studies at Miami University’s Farmer School of Business (2001 to 2014) and coached the Miami University Mock Trial Program and the University of Dayton Mock Trial Program. Haughey has also been a mock trial coach at St. Xavier High School and a board member of the American Mock Trial Association since 2003.

He was born and raised in Butler County and is a graduate of St. Xavier High School.
