Judge Darren M. Kugler - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Darren M. Kugler (Ret.) served as a judge for the 3rd Judicial District Court of New Mexico. Kugler was elected to the bench in 2012 and re-elected in 2014. He resigned in 2017 following allegations of misconduct.

The 3rd Judicial District encompasses Doña Ana County.

Prior to his election, Kugler was the Domestic Violence Commissioner for the 3rd Judicial District, a position to which he was named in 2008.

Kugler earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish from the University of New Mexico in 1989. He later completed a J.D. at the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2000.

After graduating from law school, Kugler began his legal career as an assistant public defender. He worked in that capacity until 2004, at which time he became an assistant district attorney.

He is registered as a Democrat.
