Judge David A. Barra - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. David A. Barra is a judge for the Vermont Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Phil Scott on February 8, 2018.

Over the course of his judicial career, Barra has presided over civil, criminal, and family matters in Bennington County.

Prior to his appointment, Barra owned and operated the Law Offices of David A. Barra, a law firm he established in 2011. During his tenure there, he specialized in civil litigation, zoning, landlord-tenant, and municipal law matters. Before that, he spent twenty years as a founding partner at Unsworth & Barra (1993 to 2011). He was also a partner at Paul, Frank + Collins, Inc.

Barra earned a bachelor’s degree in English and history from Williams College in 1979. He then completed a J.D. at the Georgetown University Law Center in 1982. He is licensed to practice in Vermont (1982), the United States District Court for the District of Vermont (1982), the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit (1986), and New Hampshire (2004).

His memberships have included the Chittenden County Bar Association and the Vermont Bar Association.

He was a resident of Essex, Vermont, at the time of his appointment. A longtime soccer referee at the high school and collegiate levels, Barra has served as the United States Soccer Federation State Referee Administrator for Vermont and the Vermont Interscholastic Soccer Association’s representative to the National Interscholastic Soccer Association.
