Hon. David A. Murphy is a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Court of New Mexico in Bernalillo County. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on July 11, 2022.
Murphy began his judicial career as a judge for the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court in 2019 and remained in that capacity until his appointment to the 2nd Judicial District Court. During that time, he presided over the Community Veterans Court.
Prior to joining the bench, Murphy had worked as a deputy district attorney with Santa Fe County District Attorney’s Office and the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office. As a prosecutor in Bernalillo County, he supervised the General Crimes Division. Murphy also spent time as an assistant attorney general with the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office and as an assistant public defender in Albuquerque.
He received a B.A. from the University of New Mexico. Murphy went on to complete a J.D. at the University of New Mexico School of Law. He was admitted to practice in New Mexico in 2008.
Murphy has served as a member of the New Mexico Supreme Court Equity & Justice Commission.
When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys spending time with his husband, Damien DeMenno, and their Corgi, Buster.
Murphy is registered as a Democrat.
