Judge David B. Bennett - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. David B. Bennett is a judge for the Guernsey County Court of Common Pleas (Probate and Juvenile Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014.

During his judicial tenure, Bennett helped implement the Thinking for a Change program, which seeks to educate youth on the dangers of drugs and poor life choices. In addition, along with the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, the Guernsey County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and the Area Agency on Aging Region 9, the court offers free family guardianship training multiple times a year to help satisfy a guardian’s educational requirements.

At the time of his election, Bennett was president of the Bennett Title Agency, Inc., a position he had held since 2000. He also spent twenty-five years as a councilman-at-large on the Cambridge City Council (1990 to 2015). As such, Bennett sat as chairman of the Finance Committee and was president pro tem. He also served as a representative to the Cambridge Guernsey County Community Improvement Corporation, where was a past president.

He began his legal career as a partner in Knowlton & Bennett in 1985. The firm handled general civil litigation, real estate, probate and estate planning, business development, family law, creditor rights, and criminal defense matters. Bennett practiced there until joining the bench.

He received a B.S. in education from Bowling Green State University in 1982. Bennett went on to complete a J.D. at Capital University Law School in 1985. While a law student, he was president of the Student Bar Association.

His memberships have included the Guernsey County Republican Central Committee (chairman), the Ohio State Bar Foundation (past president), and the Ohio State Bar Association Board of Governors.

Bennett is a native of Guernsey County and a graduate of Cambridge High School.
